It is
reported that Cancer will now affect 1 in 3 people during their
lifetime. This is a frightening statement which we cannot afford
to ignore.

| In 1988, when George was first diagnosed
with his non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, the shock was unbelievable for him
and devastating for us, his family. With the dedication of the medical
team and their treatments each year at the RVI., George was able to
fight his battle and lead an almost a normal life. It was in the early
years when he was bravely undergoing treatments that he perceived
the concept of raising much needed additional funding through music.
With the help in particular of his long standing friend and opera
singer, Benjamin Luxon, CB.E., the North East Last Night of the Proms
was created and NEPAC was born. |
|
In addition to financial support through music, George also recognised
the need for moral support for other cancer sufferers and he immediately
tried to pass on to others the benefits which he had received, namely,
to give hope where hope did not exist. This was mainly achieved
through publication of his two books. The first "Cancer is
only a Word" catalogued his experiences in a reader friendly
way and inspired others to address their cancer in the same positive
spirit. His second book, "One Lump or Two?" continued
in the same vein, clearly demonstrating how a full and active life
can still be enjoyed.
Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma affects both the young and the old, so please
do help us to financially support our local research team at the
R.Vr. to continue their very important (and successful) work of
improving treatments and enabling others to have the all important
extra years that George and I enjoyed and for which we were so very
grateful.
With this in mind I am planning to establish in George's name
a Research Studentship into non-Hodgkin's lymphomas under the guidance
of Professor Stephen Proctor at Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary.
We envisage that in order to achieve an appropriate level of funding
we need to obtain signed Banker's Orders from at least 300 subscribers
each donating £4 per month.

Message from Professor Stephen Proctor
The Scotland & Newcastle Lymphoma organisation began in 1979
with the aim of trying to organise lymphoma research for the combined
population of Scotland and Northern England, representing 8.5 million
people. As Chairman of the Therapy Working Party r have had an involvement
in this organisation for 20 years. Its function is total data collection,
treatment of all patients and involvement in clinical and laboratory
studies. These studies aim to identify, in particular, the differences
in the types of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (there are 30 different kinds),
so that we can better tailor the treatment for each individual and
each group of tumours.
On the background of this progress, it is now clearly necessary
to develop and organise committed researchers to be involved in
aspects oj the non-Hodgkin's lymphoma research pathway. Additionally,
it is particularly younger people whom we need to involve within
the infrastructure of this. research programme. r understand that
Rosalynde Walker and the NEPAC Trustees hope to be able to establish
funding for a rolling research post for a clinician or scientist
to take forward our understanding of the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas,
in memory of George Walker.
