Background

The very first North East Last Night of the Proms was staged in 1990 by George and Rosalynde to thank Professor Stephen Proctor and his team at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), Newcastle Upon Tyne. The starting point was simple: a one off North East version of the Last Night of the Proms, to donate funds to the Marrow Transplant 2000 campaign. George asked Benjamin Luxon, the acclaimed baritone, old friend and university colleague, if he would perform.

The tickets sold very quickly and the night was a resounding success; ending with cries from the audience of 'another night next year please'. So began an annual event for the people of the North East to raise money for Cancer Research at the RVI Hospital, Newcastle.

The Charity NEPAC (the North East Promenaders Against Cancer) was formed shortly after and is now proud to have Benjamin Luxon, Janice Cairns, Sir Thomas Allen, Suzanne Manuell and Bradley Creswick as patrons. Since then, supporters and the families of those who have benefited have held a range of events which all contribute to work to combat cancer and improve treatments and survival rates.

Now NEPAC regualry hosts the following charity events.

NE Last Night of the Proms 2010

No other event rivals our very own North East Proms! The experience veers from a party atmosphere to moving moments of silent reflection; from sharing exceptional musical performances to the joy of taking part in a glorious flag-waving singalong. The audience is treated to a wide range of the classical music most popular with UK concert goers: light opera, favourites from the musicals, orchestral and solo performance.

The climax to the evening is memorable. Stage and theatre alike participate exuberantly in the Proms traditionals: Pomp and Circumstance March, Land of Hope and Glory, Fantasia on British Sea Songs, Rule Britannia and Jerusalem. And that special local flavour is added with Blaydon Races.

Suzanne Manuell Concert

Suzanne was so impressed by the North East Proms that she decided to stage an annual springtime concert in support of NEPAC. This is now in its 15th year.

Bradley Creswick Swing Night

Northern Sinfonia’s Leader makes his own personal contribution to NEPAC through his annual performance with Friends.
